Serengeti Great Migration Safari – Detailed Itinerary (6 Days)

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha – Safari Briefing

Arusha serves as the main starting point for Tanzania’s legendary northern safari circuit. From here, travelers easily access iconic destinations such as Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, and Arusha National Park. Most safari operators, guides, and tour companies are based in the city, making it the logistical center for wildlife tourism.

Arusha is a culturally diverse city with strong Maasai heritage and a vibrant local lifestyle. It also hosts international institutions such as the East African Community (EAC) and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), giving the city a global character that attracts diplomats, researchers, and international visitors.

The city offers a wide range of accommodations—from luxury lodges and boutique hotels to budget guesthouses. Restaurants, cafés, curio markets, museums, and cultural centers cater well to tourists, making Arusha both comfortable and engaging.

Activities

  • Airport pickup and transfer to hotel
  • Safari briefing and tour overview
  • Leisure time at the lodge
  • Accommodation: Arusha hotel or lodge
  • Meals: Dinner

Day 2: Arusha – Central Serengeti (Seronera Area)

The Central Serengeti, also known as the Seronera region, is the heart of Serengeti National Park and one of the most rewarding safari destinations in Africa. It is famous for its year-round wildlife abundance, classic savannah landscapes, and exceptional game-viewing opportunities.

While the Great Migration moves across the Serengeti ecosystem, Central Serengeti is a key migration corridor. From April to June and October to November, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras pass through the area, attracting dramatic predator action.

Activities

  • Early morning departure from Arusha
  • Scenic drive via Ngorongoro Conservation Area
  • Game drive en route to Central Serengeti
  • Afternoon game viewing in Seronera Valley

The Seronera region is famous for year-round wildlife, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, and elephants.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tented safari camp / Lodge (Central Serengeti)
  • Distance & Time: 325 km | 7–8 hours
Day 3: Full-Day Game Drive – Central Serengeti

Central Serengeti is renowned for its year-round wildlife concentration. Thanks to the permanent Seronera River and its tributaries, animals remain in the area even during the dry season. While the Great Wildebeest Migration moves across the Serengeti ecosystem, Central Serengeti plays a key role, especially from April to June and October to December, when massive herds pass through or gather nearby.

Activities

  • Morning and afternoon game drives
  • Tracking resident predators and migratory herds
  • Picnic lunch in the wild

Enjoy exceptional wildlife density, ideal for photography and predator sightings.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Same lodge/camp (Central Serengeti)
  • Distance & Time: Flexible game drives | 4–6 hours
Day 4: Central Serengeti – Northern Serengeti (Great Migration Area)

Northern Serengeti is one of the most dramatic and exclusive regions of Serengeti National Park, famous worldwide for the spectacular Great Wildebeest Migration river crossings at the Mara River. It offers a raw, remote, and truly wild safari experience.

From July to October, millions of wildebeest and zebras gather along the Mara River, attempting to cross crocodile-infested waters in one of nature’s greatest shows. These crossings are unpredictable, intense, and unforgettable making Northern Serengeti a top choice for migration focused safaris.

Compared to Central Serengeti, Northern Serengeti is less crowded and more pristine. The region features open grasslands, rolling hills, riverine forests, and granite kopjes, creating a sense of isolation and exclusivity that many travelers seek.

Activities

  • Morning game drive while heading north
  • Transfer to Northern Serengeti (Mara River region)
  • Afternoon game viewing near the river

This area is renowned for dramatic Mara River crossings (July–October), with crocodiles and predators in action.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Tented safari camp (Northern Serengeti)
  • Distance & Time: 145 km | 4–5 hours
Day 5: Full-Day Great Migration Experience – Northern Serengeti

The Mara River and its surrounding vegetation provide lush green scenery, particularly during the dry season. The dramatic riverbanks and wildlife interactions make this region exceptional for photography and documentary-style safaris.

Northern Serengeti borders Kenya’s Maasai Mara, forming one continuous ecosystem that allows wildlife to roam freely across international boundaries—an important factor in the success of the migration.

The area is best explored through guided game drives and stays at luxury lodges and mobile tented camps, strategically positioned near the river crossing points. Access is typically via Kogatende Airstrip, ideal for fly-in safaris.

Activities

  • Full-day game drive near Mara River
  • Witness wildebeest and zebra migration
  • Predator sightings including lions, leopards & hyenas

Your guide will position you strategically for the best chance to witness river crossings.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Same lodge/camp (Northern Serengeti)
  • Distance & Time: Flexible game drives | 5–6 hours
Day 6: Northern Serengeti – Arusha / Departure

Arusha is a culturally diverse city with strong Maasai heritage and a vibrant local lifestyle. The city offers a wide range of accommodations from luxury lodges and boutique hotels to budget guesthouses. Restaurants, cafés, curio markets, museums, and cultural centers cater well to tourists, making Arusha both comfortable and engaging.
